The most famous of all Kunqu operas, The Peony Pavilion ( 牡丹亭), will be performed on July 12 at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, in the framework of the Athens and Epidaurus festival 2017 and as part of the China-Greece Year of Cultural Exchanges and Creative Industries Cooperation.
It is a 16th-century Chinese musical drama about eternal love, written by Tang Xianzu and arguably the most popular play of the Ming dynasty, that all Kun theatre troupes include in their repertoire.
Established in 1956, the Suzhou Kun Opera Theatre of Jiangsu Province has performed both Kun and Su Opera. In 2001, the Opera adopted its current name. For the past sixty years, it has promoted the revival of Kun Opera.
