In Beijing “The Saviors of God” by Kazantzakis and “The Birds” by Aristophanes
Two Greek plays on important theatrical stages of the Chinese capital
Within the framework of the Year of Cultural Exchanges between Greece and China and the 18th “Meet in Beijing Arts Festival”, the State Theatre of Northern Greece presented in Beijing, on May 10 and 11, a theatrical version of the philosophical text “The Saviors of God” by Nikos Kazantzakis , directed by Andreas Koutsourelis. The audience in the “Art & Education Center for the Performing Arts” at Tsinghua University had the opportunity to appreciate from a theatrical perspective the existential issues and metaphysical queries raised in the philosophical text by the well-known in China Greek author.
Some days earlier, from the 26th of April to the 2nd of May, the Chinese directors Luo Jinlin and Luo Tong staged a performance of “The Birds” by Aristophanes in Beijing National Centre for the Performing Arts, the most important theatre of the Chinese capital. The two famous directors opted for a modern approach of the ancient text and presented a youthful version of the ancient Greek comedy. The performance received excellent reviews. In fact, the ancient play is considered “a masterpiece of the ancient Greek comedy, full of criticism and sarcasm, poetry and imagination, humor and comic elements”, while the performance highlighted the uniqueness and the comic style of the text.
