A Chinatown for tourists in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki was quite unknown to the Chinese market. However, slowly but steadily, the Municipality has been taking steps to make it visible on the Chinese investment map. These include, among other things, the participation in exhibitions and visits, the active participation of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in programs, as well as the encouragement to turn the area around Aesopos street into a veritable Chinatown.

“The geographical position of our country renders Greece to a physical bridge between Europe and Asia and a privileged partner in terms of Chinese trade” underlines the Alternate Foreign Minister for European Affairs, George Katrougkalos as he describes the Greek strategy to capitalize these advantages.

We have been hearing for a long time about the “strategic cooperation” between Greece and China. What has changed during the last year?

Before becoming Attica Region Governor, Rena Dourou headed the foreign policy department of the SYRIZA party. This is one of the reasons why she has been prioritizing diplomacy in the largest region of the country. She has been investing in an outward-looking orientation, working to create strong channels of cooperation with China.

Greece to expand ties with China in telecom, audiovisual & culture, energy, transport and infrastructure projects

The expansion of relations with China in the spheres of telecommunications, culture, cinema and the audiovisual cultural industry, as well as through economic cooperation and investments, constitutes a “strategic choice for Greece”, said Greek Digital Policy Minister Nikos Pappas.

Creating a new platform of cooperation and dialogue

Prime minister Alexis Tsipras visited Beijing on 12-15 May to attend a high level Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. In Beijing, Tsipras had meetings with the President and the Prime minister of China, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang. He also addressed the 2nd Greek-Chinese City Forum and inaugurated the Greek Studies Centre at the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU).
