In Aitoloakarnania, hamlets with ancient theatres are dotted throughout the whole area. Ancient Thermo awaits you to admire the galleries of the Agora of the Aetolians and the rare painted friezes of the temple of Thermios Apollo. The Oiniades Acropolis will stun you with its impressive walls and the ancient theatre that overlooks the River Acheloos. The Castle of Nafpaktos and the Venetian harbor may be familiar to everybody. However, there are many other well preserved fortifications which are equally inspiring. They include the castle of Antirio and the fort of Aktio, built on the sea.
In Achaia, the diverse and interesting sights of historical value in Achaia require time to be properly appreciated. Indeed, one of the most important cities, Ancient Aigeira, is still being excavated. In ancient Kerynia near Diakopto, a memorial to heroes of antiquity forms the centerpiece of the site. Ancient Eliki fell prey to a powerful earthquake in the 4th century BC and fishermen over the years have reeled in the visitor with tales of sunken ruins in the depths of the Corinthian Gulf; their very own «Atlantis» in fact!
Finally, in Ilia, antiquity endowed it with a priceless gift, the sacred life of ancient Olympia. A visit to the archaeological site of Olympia constitutes a unique experience. Excitement builds with every step in the birthplace of the Olympic spirit. In the Archaeological museum of Olympia the exhibits wonderfully illustrate the story of the sacred site and the extent to which ancient Greeks were devoted to the aesthetic ideal. Interwoven with the events of the Olympic Games, ancient Ilida also shares in the glory of this institution. It was here that the Games were first organized in 776 BC.
