Promoting Greek-Chinese Cooperation in the arts, the National Museum of Contemporary Art presents an exhibition at the Chinese NAMOC museum until 17.1.2019

A National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) exhibition titled “At the Beginning Was the Word - Concepts – Images- Script” was launched at the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC), on November 27, 2018. The exhibition is structured around 40 Greek and foreign artists and about 80 artworks belonging to the EMST permanent collection. It forms part of the Greece-China Year of Cultural Exchanges programme of events, and is the fruit of cooperation between the two Museums, which began in 2017 with the “CHINESE XIEYI: Masterpieces from the National Art Museum of China”, exhibition hosted at EMST from September to November 2017.

Speaking at the inauguration, EMST Director Katerina Koskinas pointed to the exhibition’s original approach, which aims at highlighting the universality of artistic conception and expression by giving prominence to language and the word, as is evident in the title. “Reading” the exhibits through multiple prisms may serve as a starting point for a creative and fertile engagement of the visitors with the exhibition, leading to a broadening of perspectives that only art can offer.

Addressing the event, Georgios Arnaoutis, First Counselor at the Greek Embassy in China, referred to the numerous cultural activities and visits of Chinese and Greek artists in the two countries, in recent years. Exchanges and collaborations in Fine Arts, he noted, undoubtedly hold a prominent place not only in Greek-Chinese cultural relations but also in terms of people-to-people contacts, as was envisioned in the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Greece and China in Beijing last August.

Wu Weishan, a member of the CPPCC Standing Committee, Vice President of the Chinese Artists Union and President of the China National Gallery, referred to the importance of Greek culture in the evolution of global ideas and spirit, including in Fine Arts, and pointed to an ever closer cooperation of the two countries in the cultural field, which, as he said, is reflected in the EMST exhibition in Beijing.

The exhibition will be on display at NAMOC until January 17, 2019.
